# What is a pawn fork in chess?

A **pawn fork** is a type of [fork](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/what-is-a-fork-in-chess) in which a [pawn](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/how-does-the-pawn-move-in-chess) advances to a square where its two diagonal attacks threaten two enemy [pieces](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/how-every-chess-piece-moves) at the same time. Because the pawn is the least valuable piece, the opponent nearly always loses material. A higher-value piece cannot justify trading for a pawn.

## What makes a pawn fork different from other forks?

Any [piece](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/how-every-chess-piece-moves) can deliver a fork, but **a pawn fork is unique because the pawn captures diagonally while moving forward**. That means a pawn fork can only threaten pieces that sit on the two diagonal squares directly ahead of the pawn, since it is the only piece that can never retreat!

**The key difference is value**. Since pawn forks always target pieces of higher value, the trade of an enemy [bishop](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/how-does-the-bishop-move-in-chess) or [rook](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/how-does-the-rook-move-in-chess) for a pawn will always favor you.

Before playing a pawn fork, **make sure the destination square is safe**. If your opponent can immediately capture your pawn on that square and you haven't won back enough material, the fork may not actually gain you anything. Always check that the forking square isn't well defended before you push.

## How do you defend against a pawn fork?

As always, **the best defense is prevention**. Before placing two of your [pieces](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/how-every-chess-piece-moves) on the same rank, ask yourself whether an enemy pawn can advance between them. Board awareness is the best shield against a pawn fork!

After the fork has happened, you could still have options. If the forking pawn is undefended, you might be able to **capture** it with one of the attacked pieces. Another option is to **counterattack** with a bigger threat of your own (for example, delivering a [check](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/what-is-check-in-chess)) which buys you time to save both pieces. But most of the time, a well-played pawn fork wins material cleanly!

## Frequently asked questions

Can a pawn fork a king?

Yes. A pawn fork that attacks a [king](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/how-does-the-king-move-in-chess) and another [piece](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/how-every-chess-piece-moves) is especially strong because the king must move out of [check](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/what-is-check-in-chess) first. That means you can capture the other forked piece on your next turn.

Is a pawn fork more common in the opening or the endgame?

Pawn forks appear most often in the middlegame, when the board is crowded and [pieces](https://preview.duolingo.com/chess/terms/how-every-chess-piece-moves) cluster together. They can also appear in endgames, when the remaining pawns advance in the hope of promotion. A pawn fork can turn the game around at any stage, so stay alert!
