What is checkmate in chess?

Checkmate is a position in which a king is under direct attack, has no safe square to move to, and no friendly piece can block the attack or capture the attacker. It ends the game immediately with no further moves played, awarding a win to the side that delivered it.

How is checkmate different from a regular check?

A regular check threatens the king but still leaves at least one escape. The king can move, a friendly piece can block, or the attacker can be captured. Checkmate is when a king is in check, but there is no way to escape this check. A check is a warning. Checkmate is the end.

How do you create a checkmate?

You often create checkmate by coordinating multiple pieces. One piece delivers check while other pieces guard escape squares, block retreat paths, or defend the attacker. The opponent's own pieces can also work against their king by blocking squares it would otherwise flee to.

How do you defend against checkmate?

You defend against a potential checkmate by defending squares around your king, and by keeping escape routes open for your king. Sometimes you can move a pawn up so your king has a potential escape square from the back rank. Keep your pieces active and coordinated so they can block or capture an attacker.

Watch for common early-game traps like Scholar's Mate, where a queen and bishop team up to attack the weak square near your king. Knowing these patterns lets you defend before the threat becomes unstoppable.

Frequently asked questions

Can any piece deliver checkmate?

Yes. Any piece in chess can deliver checkmate, including a pawn. While the king cannot deliver checkmate by moving right next to an enemy king, a king can deliver checkmate in rare cases through tricks like discovered attacks or even by castling.

Is checkmate the only way to win a chess game?

No. Your opponent can also resign, typically because they believe checkmate is inevitable. In timed games, running out of time can also count as a loss (as long as the other player has enough material to theoretically deliver checkmate). But checkmate is a guaranteed way to win.

What happens if the king is not in check but cannot move?

That is stalemate, not checkmate. This only applies when the player whose turn it is has no legal moves at all with any of their pieces, not just their king. Stalemate is a draw.
