# How does the rook move in chess?

The **rook** is a long-range [piece](/content/chess/terms/how-every-chess-piece-moves/index.html) that slides any number of squares along ranks (horizontal rows) or files (vertical columns), but never diagonally. While it cannot jump over other pieces, the rook has the ability to **castle** with the [king](/content/chess/terms/how-does-the-king-move-in-chess/index.html).

Given two moves, the **rook** can sweep straight up the column and then slide along the row to capture the stars.

## How do you take advantage of a rook's strengths?

Here are some ways to take full advantage of your **rooks:**

- **Castle early.** Castling moves your king to safety and brings your rook toward the center.
- **Open a file.** Trade [pawns](/content/chess/terms/how-does-the-pawn-move-in-chess/index.html) in the center or on a wing to create an open file. Then plant your rook on it. If your opponent does not contest the file, you essentially own a highway into their position.
- **Aim for the seventh rank.** A rook on the seventh rank (second-to-last row) is a nightmare for your opponent, especially in the endgame. It attacks pawns, and restricts the enemy king.
- **Double your rooks.** Place both rooks on the same open file or the same rank. Two rooks working together are far more dangerous than two scattered rooks.

The black rook slides all the way along the open file to the back row to deliver checkmate. Engine-verified position, [Elo](/content/chess/terms/what-is-elo-in-chess/index.html) 867.

## How do you defend against an opponent's rook?

To defend against an enemy rook, keep these principles in mind:

- **Contest open files.** Do not let your opponent monopolize an open file. Place your own rook on it, even if you just hold the line.
- **Block the seventh rank.** If the enemy rook is threatening to land on your seventh rank, station one of your [pieces](/content/chess/terms/how-every-chess-piece-moves/index.html) to guard the entry square, or place your own rook on the same rank defensively.
- **Do not leave pieces undefended on open lines.** A rook can strike across the entire board in one move. Any undefended piece on a rank or file that an enemy rook can reach is in danger.
- **Give your king an escape.** A common rook tactic is a back-rank [checkmate](/content/chess/terms/what-is-checkmate-in-chess/index.html), where a rook slides to your last rank and delivers checkmate because your king is trapped behind its own pawns. Give your [king](/content/chess/terms/how-does-the-king-move-in-chess/index.html) a breathing square (called "luft") by pushing one pawn in front of it before the danger arrives.

The black rook takes advantage of a trapped king. The white rook's defense is insufficient as it has no other pieces to back it up.

## See it in action

### Example 1: Rook hunts three stars

Capture in three moves.

**Solution**: The white rook moves sideways to capture the nearest star. It then slides straight up for the next, and finally, it sweeps sideways to collect the last one.

### Example 2: Planning the capture route

Capture all three stars in three moves.

**Solution**: The white rook moves sideways to capture the star on its left, then the one on the far right. Finally, it drops straight down to take the last one.

## Frequently asked questions

Can the rook move diagonally?

No. The rook moves only horizontally and vertically. Use [bishops](/content/chess/terms/how-does-the-bishop-move-in-chess/index.html) or [queens](/content/chess/terms/how-does-the-queen-move-in-chess/index.html) for diagonal coverage.

Can the rook jump over other pieces?

No. The rook must have a clear path, with the exception of castling, where the rook "jumps" over the king.

Is the rook more valuable than a bishop or knight?

Yes. The rook is worth 5 points, making it more valuable than a bishop or a [knight](/content/chess/terms/how-does-the-knight-move-in-chess/index.html), which are each worth 3 points.

When should I bring my rooks into the game?

Rooks usually become active in the middlegame or endgame, after you have castled and have open files.

What is the best square for a rook?

There is no single best square, but rooks love open files, the seventh rank, and positions where they can see far down a line without being blocked.
