Product Management Jobs at Duolingo
Product at Duolingo
Welcome!
At the heart of Duolingo is a product that’s loved around the world. Here on our Product hub, you’ll get to know the thinking, principles, and tactics our Product Managers (PMs) apply to power Duolingo’s engagement and growth.
Our PMs have a unique way of operating. Of course, they have a strong product sense — but they also have strong design instincts, and they’re deeply analytical. This unique combination enables us to iterate and improve our product at rapid scale.
Because of this, our PMs are trusted with substantial ownership of major product decisions. They’re empowered to:
- Build innovative features that change people’s lives. PMs here find deep meaning in their work because they can see how their product features help reduce economic inequality via education.
- Drive impactful product features from idea to experiment. PMs here are not relegated to one part of the process; they oversee the whole process, as if they were running a startup within Duolingo.
- Operate as a product manager at the highest level. PMs here apply their strong design sense to make sure a feature is excellent, and they deeply analyze data to make sense of learner behavior.
It’s easy to stay motivated when we’re serving learners around the world. But we still have work to do: we want to build the best Product team out there. We hope you’ll find something to learn from our team — and that you’ll consider joining us.

[After 9 years, I should be tired of these people. 😂
But the truth is, some of my closest friends are Duos. That’s not the case for everyone at the company, but it is for me. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
I want to take a moment to appreciate our team - specifically the folks I work with in product.
\
- They're mission-obsessed.
People turn down other offers to stay at Duolingo. When I ask why, they mostly talk about the mission. They want to build something that changes lives, and solve education problems that haven’t been cracked yet.
\ - They're ridiculously smart.
I'll pitch what I think is a great idea and they’ll find a dozen holes in it… things I didn’t see. Maybe they're better at design than me, or they've seen an angle I missed, or they've thought longer about the problem. Either way, we push each other to be better.
\ - They “show don’t tell.”
The Product Managers who succeed here focus on impact and shipping features that solve actual problems. The ones who obsess over titles and promotions tend to get stuck. \ \ - They're international.
A good number of folks on the #product team are from outside the U.S., including myself. That shapes how we think about design, what problems we prioritize, who we build for. You can't build for global users if everyone on the team grew up thinking the same way.
\ - They raise the bar.
One Duo told me joining Duolingo felt like coming to the major leagues. People come here because the bar is high and they want to help us raise it even higher. We throw new Product Managers into hard problems, and seeing them figure it out is infinitely rewarding.](https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7425176503052677120/)
[I’m very excited about our most recent update to the Chess course: Player-vs-player (PVP) mode! It’s available now on iOS and soon Android!
This means you can play chess matches against real Duolingo learners, not just Oscar.
Chess is one of our most popular new subjects, and PVP will take it up another notch. Being able to play with other learners makes learning more fun and engaging.
I’m also excited about some other features we have in the works: playing with your friends, emotes, and reactions during the game.
Let me know what you think!](https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7393708746201432064/)
This seems to be on everyone’s mind: how to operationalize your product team around AI. Peter Yang and I recently chatted about this topic and here’s what I shared about how we are doing this at Duolingo.
For improving our product:
- Using AI to solve problems that weren’t solvable before. One of the problems we had been trying to solve for years was conversation practice. With our Max feature, Video Call, learners can now practice conversations with our character Lily. The conversations are also personalized to each learner’s proficiency level.
- Prototyping with AI to speed up the product process. For example, for our Duolingo Chess, PMs vibe-coded with LLMs to quickly build a prototype. This decreased rounds of iteration, allowing our Engineers to start building the final product much sooner.
- Integrating AI into our tooling to scale. This allowed us to go from 100 language courses in 12 years to nearly 150 new ones in the last 12 months.
For increasing AI adoption:
- Building with AI Slack channels. Created an AI Slack channel for people to show and tell and share prototypes and tips.
- “AI Show and Tell” at All-Hands meetings. Added a five‑minute live demo slot in every all hands meeting for people to share updates on AI work.
- FriAIdays. Protected a two‑hour block every Friday for hands-on experimentation and demos.
- Function-specific AI working groups. Assembled a cross-functional group (Eng, PM, Design, etc.) to test new tools and share best practices with the rest of the org.
- Company-wide AI hackathon. Scheduled a 3-day hackathon focused on using generative AI.
Here are some of our favorite AI tools and how we are using them:
- ChatGPT as a general assistant
- Cursor or Replit for vibe coding or prototyping
- Granola or Fathom for taking meeting notes
- Glean for internal company search
