Chess openings: What is the Pirc Defense?

The Pirc Defense, named after Slovenian grandmaster Vasja Pirc, is a hypermodern opening for Black that only gained popularity in the 1950s.
Although it’s generally considered a solid defense, it’s not very common at the highest levels because it’s relatively passive for Black.
In the Pirc, Black allows White to control the center and gain a space advantage, which can lead to cramped positions for Black.
Because the Pirc, like most hypermodern openings, requires strong knowledge of opening principles and can easily backfire, it’s often recommended for intermediate to advanced players.
The Pirc is similar to the Modern Defense, and either opening may transpose into each other. Black’s Pirc setup is also extremely similar to that in the King’s Indian Defense.
