Grünfeld Defense: 3 quick facts

• Named after Austrian player Ernst Grünfeld, this opening appeared by transposition in the famous Game of the Century, played by Donald Byrne and Bobby Fischer. It gained international recognition in the 1900s, and has since been played by top grandmasters.
• The Grünfeld Defense is an extremely sharp, attacking, hypermodern opening for Black against 1. d4. Black allows White to gain a space advantage and build a strong pawn center, then tries to break it down.
• Because the Grünfeld is highly theoretical and often leads to imbalanced positions, it’s generally recommended for advanced players. If not properly prepared, things can go downhill fast for Black!
