# Cómo formar números en inglés (¡del 1 al 100 y más!)

¡Si aprendes estos patrones, podrás recordar fácilmente los números en inglés!

Cuando aprendes un nuevo idioma, la cantidad de palabras parece _innumerable_… ¡pero puedes _contar_ con nosotros para ayudarte! Un grupo importante de palabras en el vocabulario del inglés es el de los números. ¡Empecemos por los básicos!

## Números en inglés del 1 al 10

El tip número uno para aprender los números es que debes empezar por los más pequeños. Estas son las palabras para los números del 1 al 10.

Las palabras para los números no cambian al modificar sustantivos. Por ejemplo, se puede decir I have two pizzas (“Tengo dos pizzas”) y I have two children (“Tengo dos hijos”). Sin embargo, si solo tienes una sola de esas cosas, podrías no decir _one_ a menos que quieras aclarar qué cantidad tienes. En lugar de decir “ _I have **one pizza**_” (“Tengo una pizza”), es más común decir I have a pizza (misma traducción). Si el sustantivo empieza con una [vocal](https://blog.duolingo.com/es/abecedario-en-ingles-y-su-pronunciacion/), debes usar la forma _an_: I have an eggplant (“Tengo una berenjena”).

## Números en inglés del 10 al 20

Una vez que pases el 10 en inglés, te encontrarás con dos números algo raros: [11 y 12](https://blog.duolingo.com/es/palabras-para-once-doce). La palabra _eleven_ originalmente significaba “uno que sobra (de diez)” en [inglés antiguo](https://blog.duolingo.com/es/origenes-del-ingles/) y _twelve_ significaba “dos que sobran”.

Luego de la palabra _twelve_, los números en inglés siguen un patrón bastante transparente: cantidad sobre diez + _teen_. Por ejemplo, 16 es _sixteen_, o _six_ + _teen_(6+10). Ten en cuenta que las palabras para 13 y 15 son un poco de lo que podrías esperar para este patrón: ¡son [palabras que han cambiado un poco con el tiempo](https://blog.duolingo.com/why-do-languages-change/)!

En inglés, cuando alguien tiene 20 años, dice I am twenty (“Tengo veinte”). Si una persona tiene más de 12 años, pero menos de 20, se le considera teenager o que está in their teens.

## Números en inglés del 20 al 100

En el caso de los números mayores de 20, hay más patrones que observar. En el caso de las decenas (30, 40, 50, etc.), en inglés tienen la terminación _-ty_ (como _thir **ty**_ para 30 y _for **ty**_ para cuarenta). Los otros números mayores de 20 son palabras compuestas: _twenty-one_ para 21 (20+1), _twenty-two_ para 22 (20+2), _twenty-three_ para 23 (20+3), etc.

Tal como sucede con _one_ para referirse a una sola cosa, cuando tienes 100 cantidades de algo puedes decir a hundred en lugar de one hundred. El uso de _one hundred_ es más preciso, mientras que _a hundred_ es algo inexacto. Por ejemplo, I have a hundred emails to respond to (“Tengo como cien correos electrónicos que responder”) podría significar que simplemente tienes [un montón](https://blog.duolingo.com/es/alternativas-de-a-lot) de correos en tu casilla de correo electrónico.

## Número en inglés del 100 al 1,000 en inglés

Para los números mayores de 100, el inglés a veces usa la palabra and para unirlos, como para el número 101 en one hundred and one Dalmatians (“Ciento un dálmatas”).

Igual que con 1 y 100, puedes decir one thousand o a thousand para 1,000. Cuando se usa _one thousand_, se está indicando una cantidad precisa.

## Números en inglés del 1,000 al 1,000,000

En inglés, se coloca una coma para separar entre unidades de mil, aunque en otros idiomas se usa un punto. Por ejemplo, en inglés se escribe There are 22,500 students at the university (“Hay 22,500 estudiantes en la universidad”). Si un número tiene solo cuatro cifras, la coma no es necesaria, pero a veces se agrega por claridad.

## Más números en inglés

¡En el caso de números muy grandes, es posible que encuentres diferencias según el [dialecto del inglés](https://blog.duolingo.com/es/seis-dialectos-del-ingles-de-distintas-partes-del-mundo/)! Para el número con nueve ceros (1,000,000,000) podrías escuchar billion en el inglés de Estados Unidos, pero thousand million (mil millones, como en español) en el inglés de Reino Unido. En Estados Unidos, el número con 12 ceros se llama a trillion, pero se llama a billion en Reino Unido. ¡Por supuesto, eso puede causar una gran confusión! A menos que seas un científico o matemático, lo más probable es que te convenga usar [un sinónimo de _a lot_](https://blog.duolingo.com/es/alternativas-de-a-lot) para estas cantidades. 😅

## Números ordinales en inglés

Además de estos números _cardinales_, también debes conocer los números _ordinales_. Los números ordinales son la forma de referirse a los números en una orden o secuencia particular: por ejemplo, first place (“primer lugar”) o eighteenth century (“siglo XVIII”).

La mayoría de los números ordinales en inglés llevan la terminación _-th_, pero hay algunos otros patrones que debes conocer.

- **Números que terminan en 1:** cualquier número terminado en _one_ usa la palabra _first_ para el número ordinal. Esta palabra proviene de la palabra del inglés antiguo que significa “principal”. Podrás encontrar estos números abreviados con la terminación _-st_, como _1st_, _21st_ y _431st_. Ten en cuenta que si el número termina en _eleven_, en su lugar debes usar la terminación _-th_: _11th_, _111th_, _3,711th_, etc.
- **Números que terminan en 2:** cualquier número que termina en _two_ usa _second_ para el número ordinal, que proviene del verbo en latín “seguir”. Estos se abrevian con el dígito y la terminación _-nd_. Aquí también podrás encontrar una excepción: debes usar _-th_ con los números que terminan en 12, como _12th_, _112th_, _812th_, etc.
- **Números que terminan en 3:** cualquier número que termina en 3 usa _third_ para el número ordinal. Estos números se abrevian con el dígito y la terminación _-rd_. Nuevamente, _thirteen_ es la excepción y usa _-th_: _13th_, _113th_, _513th_.
